The slot is an important cog in the wheel of an offensive playbook and every NFL team has at least one player who thrives at this position. While they aren’t as big or fast as their outside counterparts, Slot receivers have a wide range of abilities that can make them a valuable part of an offense.
They are a dangerous target
Slot receivers have speedy skills and an advanced ability to block, which helps them become difficult to defend in passing and running plays. This position also requires them to be aware of the defense and run routes that correspond with the other receivers in the playbook.
They don’t have to deal crushing blocks like their outside counterparts, but they do need to be able to position themselves well enough so they can act as a shield and help keep the ball out of the hands of the quarterback. They also have to be able to move quickly on pitch plays, reverses, and end-arounds.
Their chemistry with the quarterback is critical
Slot receivers are an essential piece of any offense and when they can get on the same page as the quarterback, it can be a powerful weapon. They can often gain a lot of yards in a short amount of time, so they need to be comfortable and confident with their quarterback.
They can also be a great asset for a team on special teams, especially when they are able to come in on short yardage runs and kick returns.
